Children and Youth

At St Peter’s, children and young people play a vital part in our life together. Two Sunday services particularly suitable for children are:
Family Communion: 9:30 - 10:25 am every Sunday (followed by refreshments)
This includes Sunday Club (see below) for Junior School age children; children of all ages are also welcome to join the Music Group which leads the singing at this service.
Afternoon Church: 4:30 - 5:15 pm every Sunday (refreshments from 4:15 pm)
This very informal, café-style service includes Crafternoon Church on the third Sunday of the month.

Special groups and activities for children and young people - starting with the very young - include:

Toddler Group  (Pre-school)

On Thursday mornings at 9:30 am we hold a toddler group for pre-school children up to the age of four years. We begin with a story and prayer in the church, and then have a break for refreshments and play in the hall at St Peter’s Church.  Do come along if you would like to join our friendly group.  The leader is Frances Roxby-Proud.

Sunday Club (Reception - Year 6)

Sunday Club offers children aged 4 to 11 the chance to have fun and learn about Jesus and his teachings.  We meet every Sunday during term time (apart from the first Sunday in the month) during the 9:30 am Family Communion Service.  Our aim is to introduce Bible stories to the children in an accessible and meaningful way.  Sunday Club sessions offer the children the chance to share what they have been doing during the week, play games and join in creative craft activities.  We rejoin the service at the end of Sunday Club at which point we share what we have been doing with the rest of congregation.

There are two age-groups: one for children in Reception to Year 2, and one for Year 3 to Year 6.  At Sunday Club we welcome all children, from any and every church or non-church background. To join Sunday Club simply come to the front of church at the very start of the 9:30 am Family Communion - from where the children go to their groups. Parents may accompany their children if they wish.

Sarah Guthrie is the overall leader for Sunday Club. She can be contacted by email via the Parish Office.

Club night sessions will include a time to consider some of the big questions of life. Each term we will also run special events like ice-skating, Laser Zone, wide games, etc. More information will be given when these events are scheduled.

The 10th Harrogate (St Peter’s) Rainbows meet on Tuesdays between 4:15 pm and 5:00 pm. We currently have 10 Rainbows aged between 5 - 7 years, and together we plan a term of activities, mixing fun and learning. At present we have a waiting list for entry.  The leader is Mel Oliver who is contactable via the Parish Office.

Brownies (8 - 11yrs)

The 10th Harrogate (St Peter’s) Brownies meet on Tuesdays from 5:45 pm til 7:00 pm (term-time only).  At present we have 24 girls who spend their time playing games, doing various types of craft work and generally having fun. Trips out are also organised from time to time. If you would like to find out more about us, please contact Lucy Morgan.

Guides (11 - 18yrs)

The 10th Harrogate (St Peter’s) Guides unit continues to thrive. We meet on Tuesdays from 7:00 pm til 8:30 pm. The girls plan their own Patrol time and in the last year have tried many crafts including glass-painting, quilling and card-making, as well as working towards numerous badges. Occasionally we have themed evenings and take part in the local St George’s Day Parade and various Guide Challenges.

Senior Section

We currently have 12 girls between the ages of 14 and 18, together with one adult leader and one or two occasional helpers.  The girls work towards Look Wider Challenges, the Duke of Edinburgh Award, Queen’s Guide Award, Young Leader qualification and Adult Leader qualification – again further developing their skills, independence and confidence.

Creative Groups

St Peter's Players (children and adults)

This group involves all ages in a major Autumn production; in 2017 this was 'The Wind in the Willows' and in 2018, 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat'. All are welcome either on or off stage.

Bell Ringers (aged 10 to adult)

St Peter's has a very active band of ringers, who ring for three services every Sunday. Learning to ring takes commitment and patience. You must be willing to come to practice on Fridays 7:00 - 9:00 pm, and ring for at least one service on most Sundays.

9:30 am Music Group (children and adults)

This group leads worship at the 9:30 am Family Communion every Sunday and also at some other services through the year at Christmas and Easter. The Group is always ready to welcome younger and older children as singers and instrumentalists. Setting up takes place at 9:00 am every Sunday - with rehearsals on the last Sunday of the month at 4:00 pm, accompanied by tea and cake.
